Media Ethics in Iraqi Kurdistan

Yesterday, viewers of Rudaw News Channel could watch a program, in which a 10-year-old girl was invited to describe the trauma she has experienced. This young girl, who told her story on live TV, had been raped by six different men over the last two years.

The way this program was shown, actually shows us the lack of ethics of Kurdish media. Not only are ALL TV stations affiliated to political parties and owned by political figures, they are solely focused on spreading their parties’ view and making lots of money.

A young girl’s trauma should not be exploited for viewers, profit or a political agenda. Instead, awareness should be spread to prevent horrible situations like these by instructing teachers, parents and children themselves, instead of questioning a underaged rape victim on live TV.
