{"id":3792,"date":"2021-11-23T13:46:47","date_gmt":"2021-11-23T10:16:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ikhrw.com\/en\/?p=3792"},"modified":"2021-11-23T13:46:47","modified_gmt":"2021-11-23T10:16:47","slug":"students-protests-in-krg-continue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ikhrw.com\/en\/article\/students-protests-in-krg-continue\/","title":{"rendered":"Students protests in KRG continue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students from universities and institutes across the Kurdistan Region protested on Tuesday (November 23) for the third day demanding the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) resume issuing their monthly stipends.<\/p>\n<p>The students gathered outside universities and institutes in Sulaimani, Erbil and Halabja governorates, as well as in Soran, Raparin and Garmian.<\/p>\n<p>One protester outside of Sulaimani University said, &#8220;I don\u2019t have any hope in the government but I\u2019m here to ask for what is ours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was not here yesterday but after I saw the police using force against students, I decided to join the protest,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>A protester in Halabja said, &#8220;We are here to ask the government to give back what is ours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are fully against using violence and don\u2019t want anyone to get hurt,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Footage from student protests on Tuesday showed security forces spraying tear gas into crowds in front of the new campus of the University of Sulaimani.<\/p>\n<p>The KRG suspended the payments of student stipends, that help cover the cost of transportation and living expenses, in response to the financial crisis that began in 2014.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students from universities and institutes across the Kurdistan Region protested on Tuesday (November 23) for the third day demanding the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) resume issuing their monthly stipends.
